Cannabis-Extraktion: Was ist das?

Glossary

We usually talk about cannabis in regards to its production, from growing to enjoying it in our smoking cones or smoking paper. However, there is an increasing interest around cannabis extraction.

Have you not heard about cannabis or weed extraction? No worries, below we explain what they involve, what they are used for, and especially, the techniques behind them.

What is cannabis extraction?

Firstly, let’s start with the definition: cannabis extraction is the process used to extract cannabinoids. The aim is to benefit from all the different properties for a range of purposes, including for therapeutic purposes.

Weed extraction can be done with or without solvents. If using solvents it is important to make sure that these are separated from the extract at the end of the process, making sure that there are no remnants left.

What types of cannabis extraction are there?

In general terms, there is cannabis extraction with and without solvent. But there are a lot of options within these two categories that we can benefit from.

Below we talk about some of the most famous cannabis extraction types used today.

Hashish

Hashish extraction is the most famous of all and can be done in two different forms; dry or wet.

Dry hashish extraction is the simplest. It involves shaking cuts of marijuana or their buds and separating the trichomes from the plant. This gives us an amber powder that is also called “pollen”.

Wet hashish extraction can be done in several ways. This is usually referred to as “washing machine extraction”, which basically consists of a tool that spins the material and then allows us to easily separate the hashish.

Rosin press

Rosin press (also called Rosin Tech) is a cannabis extraction process without solvent, which is done using parchment paper and a hot press (alternatively hair straighteners can be used).

It is really simple. You put the bud on the parchment paper and wrap it up like a parcel. Then you press it with the hot plates and the resin becomes liquid, making it easy to extract.

BHO

BHO (Butane Hash Oil) is used as a butane gas solvent, although there are other options such as propane, hexane, or dimethyl and methoxymethane.

You also have to use an airtight container to store the plant material and then inject the chemical solvent.

This process is used to obtain the essential oils from the plant: cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids.

Moon Rocks

Moon Rocks are the result of a cannabis extraction technique which goes by the same name and is usually done on an industrial scale, although it can be done at home using the right utensils.

In summary, it involves a bud of marijuana (of the best possible quality) which is submerged in hashish oil and then covered by kief, which is a powdered substance used to sift the buds.

There are several forms of this type of extraction meaning that there are also a lot of different types of Moon Rocks, depending on the cannabinoid combination.

Ice-o-lator

A much simpler method is the Ice-O-Lator. All it involves is filling a bucket with cold water, add in ice and the buds inside their bags.

What does this combination do? The cold causes the trichomes to easily separate. They will be ready in around 20 minutes.

RSO

RSO is also known as the Rick Simpson Oil method to obtain the best possible marijuana oil. It is almost always used for therapeutic reasons thanks to its unique properties.

All you have to do is put the plant in ethanol and the cannabinoids will extract themselves. The solvent will evaporate and a thick, high quality oil will be left.

These are just some of the many types of cannabis extraction methods. Next, all you have to do is use your favorite accessories if you feel like smoking these extracts.

We recommend using the Smoking filters for your cigarettes, as well as their grinders and smoking trays, if you want to smoke in comfort without anything going to waste.
